Aŋpétu Wašté Wiŋ (Beautiful Day Woman); Ella Cara Deloria, 1889—1971. My relative, the #Yankton #Dakota educator, anthropologist, ethnography, linguist, and novelist. Her presence in anthropological literature exposes the extreme nature of ethnocentric tendencies within early (and present) anthropological interpretations of culture. The integral reasoning provided in Ella’s documentation further justifies why this discipline needed to change. Many texts portray her as simply a secretary, rendering her again to the common status of an invisible Indigenous woman. Ella was not published nor widely acknowledged for her contributions to anthropology until the 1980s. In comparing her studies with other studies of the era (often used as indirect/direct forms of military intelligence), past Western attitudes towards Indigenous folks are easily recognizable. These attitudes were inherently woven into US systems, which reinforces we must decolonize our conceptualizations of governing and political structure. #easiersaidthandone
