The truth hurts. I am struggling. As a parent. My kids are sweet and beautiful and full of love. But, at times, they are also full of disrespect and anger. I know that this is learned behavior. And as their main "teacher" I feel the full weight of their poor choices. Recently my wife and I have come to the conclusion that we can and must make changes in our parenting style. We want to be there for our kids as loving, compassionate, and understanding parents. We realize how God, our Father, is with his children, us. He is there listening with love, compassion, and understanding. We also realize that if we want our kids to approach this world as humble, thankful people then we would need to approach them as humble parents; while maintaining a sense of authority. Teaching through actions. Much, much easier said than done. They say that it takes 21 days to break an old habit. I am guilty of backsliding and relapsing to poor parenting habits, ie. yelling, anger, isolation, etc. Ugh! This is hard. I need to pray. || #struggling

Seeing is the most important step Kevin and you are there. Parenting is a lifelong journey, we are never "good parents", we are "parents who continually strive to be good". Just considering your parenting style means that you've already begun that path. We, as humans, all test our limits- it's how we define ourselves in such an indefinite space. Kids push boundaries and act out as one method of defining and although you *may* have shown them how, my gut tells me they would have anyhow. It's a natural part of growing up. I see/feel/read the love you have for your brood and from "where I stand" (bad IG pun) I think you're an amazing dad and role model to them. There's a book series Positive Discipline by jane nelsen that has really helped me with my toddler & my teenager. Hang in there. The fact that you care so much & are making an effort shows that you are a great parent. This parenting journey is one of the hardest & most rewarding journeys you will ever take! Good luck! 💕

@snowmommy Lindy, thank you! The affirmation you gave was very helpful. It's just that in the heat of the moment... To be honest though, when I first wrote this and right after I hit "send" I felt a weight come off of me. I knew what I wanted, and how to get it. I guess the struggle is part of the lesson. The lesson that spans decades, and not just the moment that I'm struggling in. Thank you! I hope that you and yours are well!

I feel you. Parenting kindly and consistently is a struggle for me. I think my greatest downfall as a mother is yelling. I do it way too often, and I love my babies so much, it breaks me in the worst possible way when I have a day where I am yelling from morning 'till night. We have good days, and bad, and more good, then more bad... just when I think I am getting the hang of it, they throw me for another loop. If y'all are interested in a few parenting books, these two changed my life and confirmed what I felt in my gut about gentle parenting: Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline by Becky Bailey PhD, and Raising your High-Spirited Child, by Mary Sheedy. Incredible books.
