IG ART HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Julian Schnabel Julian Schnabel made work that went against formal, minimal, and postminimal art. Painting was not dead to Schnabel, in fact it was one of the most alive things. Some of the textures he created in his paint were associated with kitsch, especially his black and red velvet paintings. He did not avoid painting weighty subjects, Schnabel dived head first. Schnabel had a breakthrough when he began making plate paintings, he liked the physicality they offered, the way they held what he put on them and the concepts he put in them. His work often spoke of decay, dismemberment, crucifixions, writhing, etc.. Schnabel said what he “Expressed is a feeling of love for something that had already existed, a response to something already felt.” (pg 232) although he completely denied he was any type of expressionist. Schnabel’s recycled imagery questioned what art really was. Critics disliked his resistance to stick to one style despite all of the attention his work was gaining.
