I bet your granddaughter is a lot like you too! Please let me take you on my personal journey when capturing my photographic "paintings". First let's establish that Mother Nature is the Empress of all great design, we are all in some way moved by her beautiful sunsets, majestic mountains, powerful seas, tranquil bays, beautiful trees and flowers, just to name a few of her delights. I, as so many others, have been moved by all of this and much, much more, however, as one of her disciples of good design, I have turned my attention to the individual elements that make up this design. As with the "Blue Lily of the Nile", each flower stem creates dozens of small blue flowers and buds. From a short distance, we see a mass of blue flowers, in itself quite beautiful, especially if part of a larger landscape. However, by getting closer to the lily the individual flowers become important parts of a whole new composition. It's at this point where I start to look for negative spaces, dark vs. light, and sharp focus vs. blurred focus. Next I attempt to determine which flower or flower element is going to be my subject in the shot, and then I try to frame the shot to the rule of thirds, (which is far more important to rectangular formats than square formats for Instagram). Of course all of this is for naught, if I haven't been moved into action by what I've seen, it must speak loudly to me, "Look at me! See all the potential I have for you to exploit! Capture my beauty for all to enjoy before I'm just a fond memory!" Surprising enough, if you listen carefully, look with your heart, the Empress has provided us a wealth of beauty beyond all imagination!
