@our_new_app
- Our new app will be an open community, welcoming anyone who loves taking pictures on their phone. The app will be an easy to browse collection of Instagram image galleries, contests, reviews, tips, user bios, news and discussions.
@stillalife you will find this interesting. Halfway down Josh gives an email address. You, with your wealth of experience as a programmer may be able to offer your services. Either way I'm pretty sure @joshjohnson would be happy to meet you and discuss your experience over the last few weeks @stillalife
Lets see @heather_was_hizzard2, this was posted 21 weeks ago. That's 5+ months ago. Where's an update? He said 3-6 months until release over 5 months ago. Pretty common in software development, but something should have been said on this post. Josh is not interested in my experience. I'm on Kik if your comment piques his interest. Thanks for thinking of me.
Looking forward!
@joshjohnson wow, sounds muy interesantΓ©! Hehe look forward to it, I'm sure it's great. I've tried plenty of other apps similar to this and nothing holds a candle to it. I love Instagram. Great job. It's simple, to the point, very user-friendly. Thank you :) I was also wondering what one might do to become an editor? I love exploring the world through others eyes and I'm a very curious person :P have a beautiful day! :)
I would also like to know ,.. When I am ready to buy a camera which one would be best!
Is there status on things thus far? Or any updates? Fingers crossed
Where?????
@joshjohnson what's happened to this?

@our_new_app
- We love Instagram too. That's what this app is all about . . . bringing back the Instagram many of us remember from "the good old days" of a year ago. :) It's very important to understand that our new app does not replace the Instagram community. To the contrary, if it's the pictures that you love, this new app will improve your Instagram experience. Let's cut to the chase. When you're in our app, we promise that you will never run into a teen idol's headshot, reposted from google. Enough said?
Lol nicely said. I love this.. wonderful idea..!
So there won't be any direct posting to your new app by app users? It will just be what you deem as show worthy?
@shoelesslinda have you seen this page?
@heather_was_hizzard2 yes thanks, I have, but if we're not on instagram anymore it's a moot point. I can't imagine an app developer would ever trust instagram not to change their api at this point... They just did it to Twitter!
So @shoelesslinda does this app mean you have to still be on IG to access it? I thought it was a completely new app??? I'm getting bogged down reading and its not even 9am xx
@shoelesslinda I'm looking at some others today. I believe flikr couldn't cope with the influx and kept crashing. I'm maybe going private and will leave one picture open so if anyone wants me I can redirect them to where I am. Let them spam that!! At least today I can comment !! Last night it was all glued up!
I'm looking forward.. Will we will connecting with IG in the application?
I can't wait!!

@our_new_app
- I. We admit it. We REALLY love mobile photography. Sure we're a little over the top, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
-
II. In our experience, living creatively energizes us and is wonderfully fulfilling. Certainly nothing is more personal than what you decide to create. We've found we love to create pictures.
-
III. We believe that creativity comes from curiosity, not the size of our lens. We love our gadgets. But, over time, we've come to realize that the quality of our picture has little to do with the cost of our camera.
-
IV. Similarly we have come to understand that we don't have to travel great distances to find great pictures. We have found surprising beauty scattered through out our everyday lives.
-
V. Maybe most critically, we've found that taking pictures just isn't as much fun if we're the only one who gets to see them. We have found that we need community to really be creative.
-
VI. Finally, when you're having such a great time, its hard not to share. We think the world deserves to see your pictures. You deserve a creative life. Join us. Pull out your phone. See what you've been missing.
@m_kay6 That's the plan. All platforms. It really all depends on how well the Kickstarter does.
So is there going to be no upload from anything other than a mobile device? I take out my old point and shoot as I haven't got an android or iPhone. The cameras on most mobile devices would be more advanced than mine so does this mean I won't be able to join in? My iPad isn't that handy for mobile photography....
@joshjohnson I'm not sure if I'm taller, but the rest of your bio sounds like the way people probably describe me... when I'm not around. cheers.
Finally! Totally agree, should be mobile photography only. @joshjohnson are you keeping the name of the app secret or can you share?
Ah, ok, just moved to point 4, it's a secret π·
I really hope that it will be far more difficult, if not impossible, for spammers to comment on our photos. That is the most annoying thing about IG. (I am not a pimp so don't post on my gallery advertising for sex. I don't care about the "like spikers" so please don't ask me to "like" something. If I do like an image I will tell you, otherwise it's insincere. Vice versa.) I hope that the new app will cut down on all that bs. Also, in response to the IGers above about the use of dslrs: I have a pretty nice Nikon rig with all the lenses but I find that my iPhone can take photos just as well as long as I'm not enlarging to poster size. The Nikon isn't always with me nor is it always convenient to drag out. That said, I really don't mind if others are using their "real" cameras because art is art is art. Is someone less of an artist if they use a pencil rather than a paintbrush?
Just want to say that every singe point is exactly how I feel- it is as if you have read my mind, @joshjohnson !
Will you have to be an IG user to use your new app? I'm going to be leaving IG

I am finalizing a contract with the team that created the Instafocus app. Download it if you are interested in seeing the basic design principles we will use to develop the app. The app will have an elegant simplicity. No pointless bells or whistles. You won't find any riveted, brushed aluminum, frames in our app. We have one simple and primary design theme. It's all about your pictures.
@glimmerlime That's actually really good. Plan B for sure. :)
@olhar @ujudkins Every feature in the app is a post from IG. The square format is here to stay. :)
Name suggestions: InstaForum, InstaJJ or InstaJojo. :)
Instafocus was instacrap
Just joined and am already excited for the next phase.
@percolated I agree with you. Instafocus was a waste.
Completely agree with @percolated and @thallmark09, Instafocus seemed to be an IG 'famous only' app. Ugh.
How do I join?

- It's simple and everyone is invited. Just download the app and sign in with your Instagram user name. The app is free and always will be.
I've been an IG user for over a year and iPhone for years. I have no idea what KickStarter is and how to download the app that the next question tells me I already have. Help me out! I'm apparently not as tech savvy as I thought I was ... ππβ

@atler @jacob606 @pavingapril Looks like its another development for iphoners to begin with, and android is a maby. IF they can raise money for it.
@pernillescheele I'm not surprised.
Actually, if they raise enough money, they will make on all platforms. But if they dont, they still will open for iphone only. Not very including if you ask me, I dont think such a big community that means so much for everyone should exclude someone. It should not matter if you are black or white in my oppinion. @atler
@pernillescheele it's simply that nobody thinks there's a market in us. Incorrect, and it's a huge loss to them and us.
@jacob606 Yes, and we keep getting left behind. How unfair, makes me mad! :)
Hey @atler @pernillescheele @pavingapril @jacob606 is there anything we could do to help them make it an android app as well?? You know like the @droidedit community we are... Just a thought I had (=

- Here's the neat thing about our community. Your level of participation totally is up to you.
-
I. Just want to browse? Simply click through our image galleries. If you're interested you can also explore pages of photographer bios, activities, tips, app reviews, news and discussion topics. You'll see what we think are the best posts on Instagram right now. You'll see a diversity of styles and ideas because the app is curated by hundreds of dedicated editors.
-
As you browse you will have access to Instagram's full functionality. You can like and comment on posts. You can even go deeper and explore a user's entire photo stream and follow them if you choose.
-
II. Maybe you're not satisfied with just looking. Maybe you want to submit an image, tip, discussion, bio, contest or review for consideration for a feature? Go ahead. We'd love to check out you post. You can easily submit any of your Instagram posts right from the app.
-
III. Are you really an Instagram fanatic? Do you want to be a part of the team that will make our community so vital? Do you think you have great taste when it comes to photography? Or maybe you have a gift for writing tips or creating posts that start discussions. You might want to apply to be an editor or a contributor.
This sounds great. Id love to be a part of this @joshjohnson
Sounds great, I'm interested.
@joshjohnson how do I apply to be an editor?
Very interesting
I want to be an editor
@th3w4cko @suriel check out the first post on this tag. #sibodd

@joshjohnson Being an editor would be wonderful... the ability to contribute my ideas and views and ways I see things would be incredible. I'm interested! Now what? π

@jj_editor_reeza π thank you so much!!ππ
I'm still creating...π± Pics should be viewed in different ways : by time, last/first order, casual order, most liked, old/new IGer, the best thing a filter for our freunds or our most liked to don't loose any shot of our buddies , and also the possibility to create a sort a "magnet link" like intelligent app which discover similitudes and link to other author we could like...what do you think @joshjohnson ???
@joshjohnson what do you think about???
@joshjohnson Josh ... you neglect me ...! π
I know I'm kind of suggesting a lot, but if there could be a pinch and zoom option, that would be very useful. I know you're really busy, but that option would be really useful. @joshjohnson thanks!
@jj_editor_franknocode I completely agree with some how attributing likes to original image and @jj_editor_awgold123 that would be awesome... I already try to do it half the time anyway only to be reminded I can't make it any larger.

I second the macro suggestion from @atheen I don't have a macro lens but love looking at macro photography in general. I think it would also be fun to have a rotating assignment gallery, something specific once a month or every couple of weeks, something you would have to go out and shoot on purpose - "birds eye view of your city" "person in a tree" "girl on a bicycle" "your neighbors house" "your favorite color" etc. sometimes kooky, sometimes serious. Not sure if the app will have some sort of a general intro page where assignments and tags could be posted.
@tanya_s I like the idea of rotating themes, maybe popular "fun" hashtags, like #circles_in_squares, #fromwhereistand, etc. The "fine art" aspect is important, but more playful themes could make it the app more accessible. There is a broad community between the best and the worst of IG... I consider myself among the "aspiring". I think categories and themes could help this app keep the friendly supportive community feel that made me fall in love with IG... plus give newbies like me, a shot at winning a little recognition now and then... while still giving a place for the "fine art" to thrive.
I do like the macro section. I love close-ups of things.
Is there a way that when pictures are uploaded, that some type of software reads the colors in the picture and then categorized it as Black and whites or color specific type galleries? I wish IG had something like that instead of letting users junk up hashtag galleries with unrelated content. Also some way to filter out duplicate pictures would be good.
I think it would be nice to make bw a sub gallery of all other galleries to keep it organized. And +1 to minimal section of course :)
I know you folks are busy, but I would like to vote for the 'macro' section as well as a 'typography' section or something to hat effect. there is a lot of great work on IG that involves type in various forms.
Macro, definately. And I like the thought of categories. And why not prefab tags? That way the browsing would be easier.
Sounds like pinterest

This is one of the coolest parts of our community. We don't care who you know or how many followers you have. It's all about your picture. Anyone's post is eligible for a feature in our community. A post gets featured in one of two ways. Either it is selected from a folder of submitted posts by an editor or it is a post published by a contributor from their personal Instagram account.
Awesome!
β€
Now were talking! Popular page on IG is a joke these days. I want dedicated followers who enjoy my style of photography.
Cool!

@our_new_app
- Honestly, I don't think so. If you want to be an editor you'll need more than a great eye. You'll need to show that you are genuinely interested in the Instagram community. Editors will not be selecting images from their friends photo streams. When they log in to their admin accounts they will be combing through hundreds of images, submitted by the entire community.
-
That said, every one is partial to a certain style. I'd expect an editor to choose the same photographer more than once. If however, I visit an editors listing and their gallery of featured posts is full of images from only three or four of their friends, we'll have a talk. If it continues, their admin account will be disabled.
@seeallie we'll definitely have more than one editor per section. I think it will only take one editor to decide a post gets a feature. Thanks for your support.
This sounds fantastic!! It will allow for different styles to be highlighted. So exciting!!
Who would be the editors? @joshjohnson @our_new_app
With great power comes great responsibility :D
ππ
@joshjohnson I would love to be an editor. How do I apply?
I'm really excited of the work of the editors in training. So excited that I want to find out to apply. Another question: since many of us couldn't do this full time, what do you think the time requirement will be?
@ujudkins The time invested will be up to you. I'd say 5 days a week 1 hour a day would be a good amount. Read the first post in this tag #sibodd to find out more details on the process of applying.
Share this photo by sending the following link to your friends: http://copygr.am/our_new_app/242577318566312665_198408469/
@our_new_app
- Actually, the concept is a lot simpler than you would think. We expect thousands of images will be submitted a day for consideration. As a reference point, the #jj tag has received over 9 million submissions in just a few months.
-
Once an editor applies and is accepted, they will be assigned one or more galleries or pages and they will have access to the fire hose of submitted images. Periodically they will comb through as many as they have time for.
-
Every so often they will be able to make someone's day. When the editor logs in to their admin account and finds an image or information post they love, they will simply select it for a feature. The app will then automatically publish the image to the appropriate gallery and leave a comment from that editors personal account, congratulating the featured photographer.
-
Featured images will be "taken off the stack" so to speak so that other editors do not mistakenly feature them again.
-
This is not meant to be a process with surgical precision. Editors will not have assignments or quotas. Is it possible that, on occasion, an unusual number of posts are submitted and some posts are not viewed by any of the app's editors? Sure. Is it possible that, from time to time, an editor may log into their account to edit the blue gallery and find no images they feel comfortable featuring. Sure. I doubt it will be much of a problem though. It may take a little time but eventually we'll get a feel for the ratio. We will know just how many editors we need to view almost every image.
-
And I think we will find that reviewing "almost every image" is good enough. I don't think, as a community, we feel entitled to a feature. We just want to know that we have as much a chance as the next photographer who submits. It's important to us that our image is judged on merit, not on our follower count or who we know.
It's great to start to meet all the jj_editors in the past weeks! Would it be possible to have some jj_editors_edu - "edu" stands for educating through comments; such editors not only pick their picks but also provide their reasons for their choices in accessible language so people can understand the featured pics better and learn from them. Something @backtobasics John used to do when he was around. I found John's forums and features most interesting and helpful on IG while it lasted.
@seeallie I like that idea. Give him a week to get settled in then take it up with @kevinkuster. He's my frontman with the aspiring editors right now. Thanks!
Excellent!! Wouldn't it be so cool to create "Mobile Photography meets Khan Academy"?! @kevinkuster
@joshjohnson it is all dazzling! Excited about it, but was away for a few weeks with less Internet access... Trying to catch up, but am overwhelmed. Do we still tag to the regular #jj ?
@seeallie that is a fantastic idea!
@joshjohnson What is the criteria for accepting an editor? Do you review their portfolios? This is a big one for me -- I want to respect the taste of an editor, but do realize that it doesn't take the ability to be a gifted photographer to be a great editor. What qualities, skills and proof of those will you require?
πNvm found the answer !!
Share this photo by sending the following link to your friends: http://copygr.am/our_new_app/242577085765663446_198408469/
@our_new_app
- Submitting your post for review is super simple. Say you are looking through our "Blue" gallery and you remember a couple posts you made that would be great additions to our collection. Just press the "+" button on the top right corner of the gallery and you'll be taken right to a thumbnail grid of all your images. Scroll and tap on your perfect blue flower shot and that super cool old blue VW Beatle. Confirm that you want to submit those two posts for our editors to review and your done. It's that easy!
-
If your image is featured in the blue gallery, you'll get an automated comment on your post in Instagram from the editor who featured your shot. Something like, "Hi. This is @joshjohnson. I'm an editor for the @***** app community. We got your submission and loved your post. You've been featured in the blue gallery. Congratulations!"
Nice.
I'm so curious π
This is just getting cooler by the minute!!
@titaponte me too π
So cool :))
@joshjohnson I'm new to the forums and have been blown away by the quality and variety of submissions! It has inspired me to experiment and get more involved in the IG community! Thank you so much for that! I love the idea of a simple "+" button for submission. However, one issue I've noticed in the forums thus far (that seems like it might be amplified by the "+" button) is that some folks submit upwards of 50 images to a forum, essentially spamming it. Would it just be up to the editors to comb through that or have you considered submission criteria beyond 1-2-3 (which must be hard to meet for those submitting 50 pics)? Sorry for the giant post.
Share this photo by sending the following link to your friends: http://copygr.am/our_new_app/242576812875856596_198408469/
@our_new_app
- Sure! :) Are you a wannabe hacker? Want to know how we're pulling this off? Keep reading. Can't be bothered with nerdy details? Skip this part.
-
It's all about the hash tags. When you selected the blue flower and that VW Beatle, the app automatically did the work of tagging your shots to our hashtag folder of submissions for this gallery. The next time you look at those posts, you'll notice a mysterious comment from you that says something like "Cool! I just submitted this post to the ***** app's editors. Fingers crossed! #*****_app_blue "
-
Yes. . . If you want, you can opt out of the little message. Flip a switch in your account's settings and the app will only paste the the appropriate tag in the comments of the post you are submitting to the editors for review.
-
Here's some of the tricks we're using to bring you galleries of what we think are the bests posts on Instagram. Remember this is pretty complicated, nerdy stuff. You don't have to understand it to enjoy our community. As a matter of fact. Unless your really interested you can skip this part. (continued on the next comment)
Didn't really understand this point... Guess would have to wait and watch for the app to be launched π
I thought most of that was just common sense... Also how would someone be notified their image was selected for the gallery?
@wimmiett You'll get a comment from the editor who featured your post, under the post that you submitted.
I'm excited!
So is it possible to submit a photo to more than one category?
@ujudkins yes.
IG limits the number of tags each photo can have. What happens when someone tries to submit a photo already at that limit?
I like the idea of using tags as descriptive keywords, but it seems like most tags in IG are meaningless - e.g., 'instagood' and 'instamood.' Is there any way this new app can make removing tags easier?

@our_new_app
- Discussions, contests and challenges are one of the best ways to meet new friends on Instagram. Our contest page editors will review any post describing a new challenge. If you want your contest considered, just submit your post to the #*****_app_contests hash tag.
-
The contest page editors will select the best new challenges on Instagram and feature them on our easy to navigate contests page.
-
See a contest that you want to be a part of? The app will allow you to easily find and select appropriate images from your Instagram account to submit. Just tap on that perfect images and the app will apply the contest's hashtag to your selected images automatically.

@our_new_app
- We get it. This is important. We are photographers too. Your image rights are yours and they always will be.
-
Here's a little side track and a quick look behind the scenes. This idea has not been fully flushed out yet and probably will certainly not make the first version of the app.
-
In the future, we'd like to help you make some money off your pictures. When you first log into the app you will be able opt in to our marketplace. By opting in you are saying that the images you include for review are also available for licensing. We will create an efficient discovery tool for wire services, stock agencies, maybe even private parties interested in prints. For a minimal percentage or a small flat fee to the community, the interested party will be put in touch with you. Eventually, as a community, we may even further develop the idea and become an independenagency.
-
Think Instagram images are not considered professional or are too low in resolution to be marketable? We disagree.
-
Actually, pulitzer prize winning photojournalists, on the cutting edge of tech, are already excited about the possibilities of mobile photography and have published mobile images in publications as prestigious as the New York Times. (continued in the next comment)
Totally agree with u!! This sounds a bit like Instacanvas π
@our_new_app sounds really cool for professional photographer. May I ask if you personally make money off of your photos and if so, how?
@scorshape I personally don't make money off of my Instagram photos. I'm a wedding photographer in atlanta.
I totally agree with you here! My pro work is still with my DSLR. But I now use my phone so frequently I don't always bring my DSLR "sightseeing" with me. I've got a commission where a client is buying some of my IG shots (using instacanvas for ease) and has me going out to shoot specific places. She wants the look of my IG pics. π. It's a very exciting time.
I agree completely! This app sounds like an excellent idea, I can't wait to be a part of it!
And I have it always with me :)
Loving this new app idea Josh! @joshjohnson π
What type of licenses are you considering for the future sales possibilities? I'm interested in rights managed licensing for my images (mobile and otherwise) but not royalty free licensing...

-Community team members volunteer to be editors because we are excited about the Instagram community, but we think something is missing. We are taking matters into our own hands and creating the anti-popular page. Maybe you know what we're talking about? We think you deserve to be recognized for creating a great image, not for puckering up in front of your bathroom mirror. No offense. Just our opinion. -
All the community's team members are acknowledged in the "Team Directory" tab of the "About Us" page of the app. Each listing will include the team members avatar, bio, a link to their personal IG account and a thumbnail gallery of all the submitted images they have selected for a feature.
-

-
*Editor- Can feature anyone's posts
-
*Contributor- Can feature their own posts
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd love to be an editor, Josh. How does one apply? π I think you know me...but...my bio includes a photo biz of 10+ years and a graphic design BA π. Not that that matters in the grand scheme of things.

- Stay tuned because we're still working on this part but, one way or another, you will need to apply. If you want to be an editor you will need to comb the #*****_app hashtags and show us images or information posts you feel are worthy of a feature. If you want to be a contributing photographer, you'll need to show us which of your images you would publish to the galleries. If you are a writer, give us an idea of the tips, news or discussion points you would publish. If you are an activity organizer, you will show us what creative ideas we can expect in your contests.
@cindyfpierce sorry I missed the notifications on this. Shoot me an email at jj@instatips.com
@jj_editor_ohemg87 will do...and no worries I just left this message this morning : )

@our_new_app
- Here are my thoughts. I think we need to be where the people are. You can't develop much of community passing out flyers in the middle of the desert. Besides i feel Instagram has been good to us and it doesn't feel right to leave.
-
I think that Instagram and Facebook will be supportive of our community. Our app adds functionality and value to Instagram. That's why they released an API. They planned on projects like this. They know they won't lose us since Instagram will always be the only place you can upload your photos from.
-
That said, I am definitely going to be emailing @kevin and @mikeyk throughout this process. I want them to be happy with what we're doing. If they have any concerns we certainly want to know about them now rather than later.
Amen!
I think @joshjohnson it's the right way! I don't want leave Instagram community, i found a lot of friends that i don't believe only virtual...but more true than real one... In my opinion we are not looking for a clone of Instagram but a simpler way to enjoy it and in the better way!
What do u mean since IG is the only place u can upload images?? U can't upload pics from the new app?? Do urs will be intertwined with IG?
I think u should and could set ur self different and shouldn't intertwine.
@joshjohnson Im trying really hard to understand. Since this app will not be something that androiders can use as its for apple at first, and MABY it will be for androiders if you can raise money for it, we are cut off from getting our pictures featured? Since we cant use this app? Or we can get featured we just cant see the feature or others that are featured?

- Development costs will be raised through a Kickstarter.com campaign. At these very early stages of development we estimate the cost of the app to be between $100,000 and $150,000 if we release on all three platforms simultaneously, iPhone, iPad and Android.
-
The Kickstarter.com campaign will involve a community mural project similar to the contest we recently completed for the new ALT hotel in Toronto. The suggested donation will be $1 for every image submitted to the contest or participants can donate $10, submit as many images as they wish and receive a poster of the final mural. These are only suggested donations. We welcome everyone's participation no matter how much or how little they are able to contribute.
-
We will welcome any companies who would like to sponsor our mural project. If we are not able to find a backer before the project is completed we will auction off the rights to the mural to the highest bidder.
-
Funds raised during the Kickstarter campaign will be used first to develop the app, second to create a fund that will cover the operating expenses of the community till it is self sufficient with sponsorship fees, and finally to fund as many $10,000 photo essay grants as possible.

(continued in the next comment)
@alexvh My daughter Miranda's college fund. :). In all seriousness. This is not a charity. Some of the profits will go to me and some of the profits will go to those who have contributed their time and money to making it a success. And like I mentioned, half of the profits go right back into the community. Thanks for the question.
You should definitely charge for this App you're making. I don't even understand how apps make money when they are free? I know there are ads but Instagram doesn't seem to have ads. Could you explain that little goodie for me? Also, why does it cost so much to make an APP? β€
ππ @joshjohnson time and talent deserves compensation, bravo!
Love the idea of helping out a need through photography.
Fund raising idea: ALT mural design as posters - it's there already in ALT's video; 3480 photos = 3000 people, $100+ a poster; $100 x 3,000 ... Have a great weekend! Thank you for all your excellent work!
This is so exciting ! I'm thrilled that everyone is able to participate. Ive got ants in my pants just thinking about it! π
@cristine_pauline charging for the app is a side note since it would be reaping money after the buildinh stages. Still a good idea :P Also, as said in a previous post(I think) there are sponsored 'themes' one being the ALT hotel in Toronto... And also isn't instagram owned by Mark Zuckerburg? He is bound to have sponsors from big people purely because he owns Facebook. Also, I don't know for a fact, but I think that if you have enough followers on a company-based-advertising account, then some sort of fees would nees to be payed... Because they are advertising and this is a money making world :) And it costs so much to make an app because it needs to have multiple plans+drafts. The entire thing needs to be encoded so the device knows how to use the file and what everything means (if it didn't, there would be bugs). And this has to happen for THREE platforms, so each code is different because the phones/iPad have different base structures, as such. I hope I make sense, I am typing on my phone (:( hahah

@our_new_app
- Ask yourself this question. When was the last time you sat through a TV ad or clicked on an irrelevant listing on a website's sidebar?
-
Companies are learning that we are no longer a captive audience. The rules have changed. Either tell us about something we are interested in or let us know that you are interested in us. Convince us that you share our values and your foot is in the door. I think from here on out, smart companies will even take it one step farther. Help with our goals and we will welcome you into our community and get out our wallets.
-
Not convinced? I can prove it. We have only hosted one sponsored event so far in the #jj community. ALT Hotels in Toronto asked us to make a piece of art for their lobby. Over 80,000 images were submitted during a two week event we called #altexpo. The ALT team created an amazing, floor to ceiling, 3d interactive mural out of thousands of our images. To say thanks, they gave away 15 hotel stays to some of the photographers who participated. Don't tell them, but we would have gladly done it without the giveaways. They spent a lot of money helping us get our images out of cyber space and into the real world.
-
Let me ask you another question. If your image was one of the thousands displayed in the lobby of the ALT hotel. . . would you be an ALT fan? I bet I can guess where you'd stay the next time you visit Toronto. I've heard from quite a few people who are planning trips just to visit the mural.
-
Remember, this event was our first try. The opportunities for collaborative marketing are limitless. I think it's a new era whose time has come. I have no doubt, smart companies will realize the potential of this new paradigm and will gladly sponsor our community.
I'm running out of words to express how much I love this entire concept! I Agree wholeheartedly with every single thing I've read, so far! Brilliant. Just brilliant!
@pipey22 cool. :). Thanks so much for your support. If you want to be a part of the team pulling it together drop me an email. Jj@instatips.com.
I can't wait for this new app! I'll tell all my IG friends about this whole thing. You're amazing @joshjohnson !
It's the entire philosophy behind content marketing. Brilliant. When people trust you there's no need to "sell them" or constantly be I their faces! @joshjohnson

@pao_paw2012 @alli_james Thanks guys! :)

@our_new_app
It all depends on how bad you want this project to happen. At these very early stages, we estimate that an iPhone, iPad and Android app will cost between $100,000 and $150,000. We'll start with the iPhone and iPad first. If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, I would like to include Android and release all three platforms simultaneously.
I use android and I really want to be part of this. I hope I don't have to buy a new phone.
PLEASE b able to include Android!! If I have to contribute some moolah,I will. It seems Iphone gets first priority n everything! I would prob not b on this app if no Android. Im not buying a new phone!! I like my galaxy s.
Yes on a Android App pkease:) I agree with @audgirlnatown and @psandoftime - its a must for the android users to as well be able to access this wonderful idea for an app! It is wonderful that I came across this account (very happy I did) because I had just mentioned to my bf tonight that I was brainstorming up ideas to start a type of community like forum for ig users who love instagram and not for a chances to be featured on 'hot? or not?' ahaha.. but it would be a placer for others that enjoy ig as a way to discover a different outlook on life on by another person photo art or by just simply expressing a emotion by the shot of the camera! I just bought the droid razr M and love it... (but with the looks of things... this jj app will be hit) :o) my two main accounts that are not them theme challenges/contests are: @madeleineaubrey_nh & @naturehippys. THANK YOU AND CAN'T WAIT! -MADELEINE
Android user here too!

@our_new_app
- Not really. Mostly because it's not really my app. You are funding it. You will be editing it and contributing your images. Your ideas are helping me develop it. This projects success is important to a lot of us.
-
I believe this app could help literally millions of people realize that adding a little creativity in their everyday life is . . . well . . . a heck of a lot of fun. Call me hokey, but I know for a fact that for some people, myself included, Instagram has been a game changer.
-
We want to spread the word. That's why I want us to make this app. It's about community. Every year, half of the communities profits, from sponsorships, will be invested back into its members for projects like photo essay grants. We will also fund grants with all the funds that remain, after development costs, from the Kickstarter campaign.
-
Most of the time, developers will try and keep an apps features a secret till it's released. I think our situation is different. You deserve a say in how the app gets developed.
-
Will someone else try and take these ideas and run with them? Maybe. I honestly don't think it matters though. What if, for example, someone who is in it for the money and is not willing to give profits back to the community, beats us to the punch with our ideas. I have a feeling they will not get your support. You might even be a little pissed.
-
If I'm wrong, if these ideas are not what our community really needs right now, I'll try again or gladly support someone who gets it right.
Go fo it jj, it's your passion and your purpose, trust it, allez, allez πππ
@joshjohnson how does this app differ from instafocus?
@hereinmyownskin read earlier posts, you'll figure it out. Most important - individual photos are featured, not the artists.
@sinisha_ thanks man! Very interesting. I like instafocus so I hope they both have a place!

@our_new_app
I'm looking for talented people, who are as excited about the Instagram community and mobile photography as I am.
-
Of course everyone will have a chance to apply to be an editor or contributor soon. But what if you can't wait and you want to help build our new community from the ground up? If you think what we are doing is important and you have a skill we could use please email me. jj at instatips dot com.
Dear Josh, fascinating project. It will solve some of the disadvantages of IG. When your are going to launch your / our! app, I will write about it in my newspaper in Germany. And we will support it in our popular accounts in Twitter, FB and Google+. Much success!
OK, I sent you an email. ;)
@editor_in_chief Great! Thanks a lot. :)
I cannot wait for this to happen. Thanks for all of your dreams that have come to life in the form of hard work. Patiently waiting... @joshjohnson
I have friends in the Houston Press and Local Live Radio here in Houston, Texas! Please contact me by email when a press release is established or mission statement of project... I can get the werrrd out with local artists in the community too! reneecosette2012@gmail.com
This actually sounds too great!! I'm one of those stubborn people, using nothing but my iPhone for shots n edits and I'm a bit skeptic Yes, to what's going on at IG. ...haven't been part of society that long but still; I see how it gets kinda way too big than its got control over.. If u read me!? Well! Great initiative!! I'll be checking u guys out, every now and then 4 sure!!
Would love to do something

- A few people have brought up a great question. "Nightly forums were one thing Josh. This just might take off and be a different ball game all together. Will you be able to get the job done by yourself?"
-
Nope. If our community grows the way I expect, I'm sure I won't be managing it alone. When I decided to do something I loved and I left the business world, I was sure I had made a big mistake investing in an administration degree. Maybe I was wrong. You never know how things work out, do you? :)
@our_new_app @joshjohnson it sounds absolutely AMAZING!! I'm new to all this. Only stumbled across the #jj family fairly recently but LOVE IT!! I'll be waiting patiently!! βΊ
i'm so happy to be part of this community. really looking forward to this, josh! thanks for your wonderful labor!
Still confused but ill get better along the way with help and a camera. I'm not bad now ..
But you DON'T ever know

That's pretty much it. We're so glad you are interested in our app. We hope you'll find it's not just a place to see pretty pictures. We're a community.
-
We want you enjoy our images and we can't wait to see yours. We want you to have fun. We want you to be inspired. But most of all, we want you to feel at home.
I just read your interview with @kewiki on juxt. Can't wait for this app! Is it similar though, to @instafocus . Also feature good talent on IG. I think it's great how all these communities are building. πβ€β€
Yes it should b phones only. An ANY phone device! It should b "on the spur of the moment" shots. When ur out n about. Instant! These devices(phones) take just as great pics as my Canon EOS rebel T3i.!!
Agreed @mcotter1981
@our_new_app I want to be an editor. I am a retired disabled woman who is a photographer using iPhone 4s and I have tons of time on my hands. I read the posts before and on #sibodd but can't read the list that @joshjohnson wrote. 2. Doesn't show up. Help!
Agreed @mcotter1981
So congrats!!
Whats the app called
Waiting for it. Hope it will used only by those who love Photograph only, amateur & pro. No spammer. ππππ
