#PhilRoberts paints the #PipeMasters Trophy every year...an original ClarkFoam blank, shaped by the man himself, #GerryLopez, then emblazoned with the likeness of Gerry from any number of classic surf photos taken of him at Pipe in the 70's. I wanna win that 'trophy' more than any other each year but I really love some of the classic surf paintings Phil does. Here are two of his originals I was lucky enough to buy from him. #MR and #CheyneHoran battling at Burleigh in the 70's on top was an image I had seared into my brain as a kid. When I got the chance to buy the bottom painting, I asked Phil about this older one. He found it in the @surfer_magazine offices in storage for 20+ years, I believe. Both of these paintings have a lot of surf humor and history in the detailing. Maybe I'll post some close ups of them. Phil also did a drawing of my dad I posted months back. There is one other old painting one he did of the Florida pros at Sebastian when I was a kid. #Arica, Chile in '06. Remember this one, @lukemun? It's so dry in Arica that it hasn't rained in over 250 years! For some reason the guys didn't want to run the event this day so we had an expression session team event instead. I partnered up with #ChrisWard. The left, El Gringo, moved outside onto another reef and turned into a huge version of Haleiwa rights. Some good waves went down and to no surprise, @surfnavarro owned the session. I managed to pluck off this one from the pack. Thanks to a guy named Kalani who swam out and got this shot. #AI won the event and @bobby_martinez got engaged that week. #DriestPlaceOnEarth #BigBarrels #ItGoesOnshoreEverydayAtElevenAM #GuanoCapitalOfTheWorld

I'd be lying if I said we're not bummed on the surf (and what we're still missing in Tahiti this week!) but there's no shortage of things to do in Rio. Took some time to learn from the masters. #BJJ w/#RicardoArona and #Judo w/#FlavioCanto at #InstitutoReaçao in Sao Conrado below the Rocinha Favela. What an experience! This place is a literal lifesaver for many of the kids growing up in and around the favelas and these guys are huge role models for them. I was gonna just say Happy #MothersDay but that doesn't really cut it. The stuff my mom went thru to raise three boys as a single parent most of those years and work a full-time job and keep food on the table and a house above our heads while going thru very difficult things in her own life is remarkable. She shielded us from most of the problems in her world and secretly dealt with what she could. The significance of your mother in your life is unequalled. When I was a kid, #MattKechele used to come home from surf trips with home movies from around the world, sit me in front of the TV at his Mom's house and tell me stories about my favorite surfers. He once had a half hour video of #CheyneHoran just standing there with his #WingedKeel single fin under his arm. #KindaCreepy, I know...haha. My brother (@robstercraw) and I met Cheyne with Matt in #CapeHatteras in 1985-86 and he gave us a couple of his fins. Photo @nate_smith_photo from final day of #Quikpro at Kirra this year. It's bad enough paddling out there in that current. I can't imagine doing the salmon run swimming it.
