. . #JJ INSTATIPS. Don't Be Blind to Symbolism I have no idea if its true or not but I remember a teacher of mine telling me there is a theory that the American Indians never saw Columbus' ships coming. Literally!. . This theory says that everything our mind processes must have relevance to something we've experienced. According to my 6th grade teacher the ships were so unique to the Indians, their minds couldn't process what they saw. Maybe the Indians situation was as out of place as finding a fancy wooden toy boat floating on the dining room table of a nursing home. ;-). . The more I think about it the more bogus it sounds, but the general concept is important I think. :-) We relate things together in a big web in our minds. It's how we make sense if an otherwise impossibly complex world. When things represent feelings and emotion they become symbolic. I believe an image is useless if it doesn't create an emotion so I'm always looking for things to shoot that are symbolic to me. Our "Hand" forum today was a good example of symbolism. A hand on a shoulder or in a fist both convey very different, strong emotions don't they?. A door, a cross, a bright light or even an empty pair of shoes. Are also very symbolic for me because of the culture I was raised in and the experiences I've had. They all quickly convey emotion. What about you? Can you think of other photographic subjects that are clearly symbolic? Find them and shoot them. They are inherently emotional and isn't that why we take pictures in the first place?. . #tips

Holding a heart in you hands symbolizes to me how much responsibility we ALL have when someone trusts you enough to share their pain with you. It's like that person is saying "I trust you enough to place my heart in your hands by sharing my true feelings and sorrows with you." I would like to personally dedicate this post and image to one of my dear friends that I met through Instagram that is currently struggling with a major life crises. Thank you for trusting me enough and sharing your sorrows with me today. I know you are in a very difficult place but, you will get through this pain and disappointment. Please continue to reach your hand out for help and support. You are not alone!" Kevin

That move us more easily than others. I think this collage and the entire gallery illustrate this well. Stay tuned and I'll right up an Instatip tonight with more of my ideas on the subject of symbolism. I'd love your thoughts on what you think of the TAPT layout I used above. I've gotten suggestions that I should make the most important information about a feature more quickly accessible. To be honest I'm a little torn for probably selfish reasons. I want people to stop and read through my posts. ;-). That kind of attitude probably doesn't lead anywhere good though. If I'm feeling the need to coerce you into reading the posts I obviously need to work on writing better content :-). .

Hey it's @kevinkuster posting. Although our #jj community highlights great images, I believe it's true success is really based on connecting with people! Today, I had the fortunate, fun and strange opportunity to spontaneously connect on KIK with three #jj members across the globe. @mr007 in Tokyo, @love_and_life_images in London and @nedijee in Rotterdam. As we talked our group just kept expanding... @saaggoo (a Mexican living in Paris) @ohemg87 in Dallas and @jasonpeterson in Chicago. What did we talk about? Mobile photography, DSLRs, coffee, editing images, kids, hair styles, dogs, and work. You know the usual things people talk about. What was so great about connecting? For a brief moment while living in all different locations, time zones and doing different things we were able to share, connect and get to know each other better. When we connect no matter what the circumstance or device the world seems smaller and we feel like we are a part of something larger. Hope you connect with someone today in our #jj community. Now back to my group KIK conversation.
