I am running out of time to finish this canvas for my little pop up art show next week (Thursday 7-10pm at Ian Ross Gallery in SF). And this morning I saw a painting that was almost done, but it wasn't quite right. It was a canvas filled with marks (beautiful marks!)that belonged to someone else.
There are so many great ideas out there. Beautiful and sparkly. But oftentimes they belong to other people.
With a fresh cup of coffee in one hand and my brush in the other, I painted it white, knowing that if I can make the marks that I MUST (not just the ones that I CAN), something original and beautiful and unique awaits, because it comes from me. And there is only one me, and one you, in all of time.
That — THAT! — is the gift that each of us can give. No matter if you arrange flowers or run a business or lead a team. Be inspired by the world, but listen to your own voice, that calling deep within... With paint on my hands (and nose and jeans), Happy Thursday from the studio.

@mauramcgovern 👋 hi from an almost dark studio save one work lamp and a glossy wet canvas (oil paints shines like gold in this light). The whole studio has a rhythm, a cadence. Im learning to dance with her... To follow, not lead. I can't force this work. It seeps out when it's ready. I just have to be here, Here, when it happens. Music... Lots of Philip Glass and John Cage and Samba (always samba) and things without words and sometimes some rap and dance music to pick me up but lately slow. Slow and quiet. Can't drown out the birds or the voices of the kids that pass by my window. Finding a rhythm in it all, yes... #keepgoing

Slowing things wayyyyy down and taking the leap to oils. When working with acrylic, i can move through a piece in a few hours. but with oil, one color takes days to dry. With intention, and a goal to work smarter, Thursday is unfolding.

Using india ink to hand draw type for #HereIMadeThis. The key? You have to write it over and over again. Then scan it in and piece together the most successful letters from all of your tests. I probably wrote that 100 times. Drawing my r's a few different ways. And my s's. in cursive, print. You never know how they'll hold together as a set.
Go small.

Ha not to mention building out the type in vector format and bringing it into font building software. Covering all accents and correcting metrics and kerning pairs. Not to mention font info and encoding for cross platform comparability.

I've been working on this very large piece for about a week. It was beautiful. Then I destroyed it. Then I saved it. Then I lost it. A dance of errors and wrong turns and standing ovations and booing. All in my head. For days. But slowly, she took form. She had a plan for my colors, my brushes. She knew what she wanted to be. And I listened. And this morning I signed her in the bottom left corner of the far left panel (there are three). And like that, she was complete. Now I will take her down off the wall, store her safely, and start over, ever beginning.
I can't wait for your show! You are such a wonderful spirit and my day is always brighter when you stop by! @elleluna popup will be sunshine splendor!! :)
