Fly. I'm in California for the next week, so I might not post very regularly for a while. I'll be back soon though!
Yeah, this isn't a fun at all. Wish it was! @2wheelsgood4u

Box Turtle. Started a new research project yesterday with a couple of animal migration experts and a couple of herpetologists. We're putting radio trackers on box turtles and seeing where they go, how they use their habitats, and where they spend their time at different times of year. I found and tagged the first turtle yesterday. Isn't she gorgeous?
Yep, full time! I work at a museum as the head of citizen science. I'm involved in this project partly because I'm a scientist by training, but mostly because we're building a citizen science project around the turtles so that we'll have members of the public looking for them too and learning how to track them. @basianj
I agree! @brickdog
Thanks! I feel pretty lucky that i get paid to find turtles in the forest. @lunabugtoo
Ooh, will do! Thanks for the tip! @jerutter
That's awesome!! I'm a wildlife biologist by trade, and career but my time now is spend in management and business administration saddled to a desk in front of a computer. The only thing that makes it okay for me is knowing that its because of my work that all our field biologists can do their work. I go out to play only occasionally now.
That is awesome, how fun!!
I'm glad I'm still on the other side of the desk, for now at least! There may come a day where I become an admin (I'm second in command at a field station), but I hope that's a long way off still! My boss is only a few years older than me, so I hope he'll stick around and let me continue doing what I do now. @basianj
Thanks! I'm pretty excited about it. @crotalusfr3ak

Eastern Pondhawk Emerging. Dragonflies emerging = amazing to see. Highly recommend watching the process if you have a chance!
Thanks! @datura_datura
This was actually my first time seeing it! I've studied dragonflies since 1998 and I just saw an emergence (8 dragonflies, all at once) a few weeks ago. Well worth the wait though! @kinestesia
Thanks! @nathanael7
Thank you so much! @dobermannp

Firefly. I LOVE living in a place with fireflies! What amazing creatures.
Thanks! @teacats
Gorgeous!!!
Thanks! @dawnacrawford
So jealous!!
Sycamore Canyon, the one down near the border - there are fireflies that actually light up there! Only place I've ever seen them in AZ, and it was a lot later than you see them in the east, Labor Day weekend when I saw them. If you ever have a chance to go, I recommend it! @datura_datura
This is the best news I've heard all year!! Thanks! Dependent upon storms and humidity, too?
I would imagine so. So many other things are! I was beyond excited to see lighted fireflies in AZ, I have to say. I've seen hundreds of the non-lighting fireflies, but never an AZ lit one until I went camping/blacklighting with some friends in Sycamore just after the monsoon started dying down a few years ago. It was great! @datura_datura
I truly enjoy fireflies! In the east at night, what so fun! They are amazing!ππππ

Fragile Forktail. This little gal was loose in my house overnight, escaping shortly after I took this shot. Found her the next morning thankfully. Wouldn't have wanted her to get hurt!

β¨πππβ¨
What do you think their lifespan is ??? They seem so fragile
She was just fine! Flew away before I had a chance to put her outside, but I found her just 10 hours later. And this genus of damselflies, Ischnura, has the best eyes! That pattern is actually one of their defining characteristics. @rosieg007
Thanks! @cyndeec
It's less than a month as an adult, but up to two years overall. The nymphal stage is really long compared to the adult stage. @2wheelsgood4u

Columbine. These are way up near the top of my favorite flower list! You just can't grow up in Colorado without appreciating columbines.
Can you grow the Colorado native blue there??? I'll send you some seeds. R u in S. Carolina ???
Did you grow up on the front range?
Lovely!!
Thanks! @catcee
I am in North Carolina now, but yes, I grew up on the Front Range. Colorado Springs. And I would LOVE to have some CO columbine seeds if you're willing to send some! @2wheelsgood4u
Thanks! @tinawut
I will collect some. They are blooming now, and I will be happy to send you some. I am talking about the blue columbine ??
Yes, the blue and white ones. Woo! So excited! I won't be able to go to Colorado again until next summer, so this makes me really happy. @2wheelsgood4u

Hover Fly/Flower Fly. These things LOVE blooming holly! And they're surrounded by other pollinators too. Apparently holly nectar is tasty to bees, flies, ladybugs, butterflies, beetles (other than ladybugs...), and a few other insects.
I admire people who do all their photos on their phones and still post in focus macro shots! It's hard to do, and it's so much eaiser to use a real camera that you know the phone only peeps have real photographic grit. :) And, if it makes you feel any better, jumping spiders are hard to photograph with any camera! They move around too much ti make it easy. @thejonnybeans
Thank you! @exposedart
Thanks Peter! @dobermannp

Seven Spot Ladybug. We've got thousands of these ladybugs at work. They're not native to the US, though, so I rather there be some other species all over everywhere...

Coral. This has got to be one of the most amazing textures I've ever seen.
Awesome! Sent a message to get everyone's full name. Funny how you often don't know that for on-line friends Thank you soooo much. I am really looking forward to meeting you as well!
Email sent. I just found out one person couldn't make it, so we are down to 3 confirmed
Excellent! And can you send the info I'll send you to everyone else, or should you have them all e mail me too? Just want to make sure everyone knows where to go - our address doesn't work on any gps software except Google's, so we can be hard to find. And I'm looking forward to meeting you too! @bobsimonoff
If your group wants to hang out past the end of the dragonfly walk, you can certainly do so. It's a pretty place - lots of things to photograph, especially in the macro range. @bobsimonoff
I can forward everything no problem! I believe they know where the art museum is, which one of the people says is in the same place. I am coming from Maryland so have no idea, but saw it in google maps I appears to be between 2 highways 40 and 440. We might do that, weather depending. Thunderstorms and sun are predicted for that day, for what it's worth. THANK YOU
Prairie Ridge is close to the 40, between the 440 and 540. If you use Google Maps, you should be able to actually find us. But I'll send you more info via e mail here in a bit. @bobsimonoff
Thanks. I am leaving Saturday morning so no rush! Thank you soooooo much
Agreed!

Long Jawed Orb Weaver. These are fun spiders you frequently find around water. They build webs over small sections of streams and wait for insects to emerge from the water.
Thanks Tom! @schrackt

Flowers. I think these flowers are beautiful!
Thanks Peter! @dobermannp
they're like little fireworks....pretty
Fragrant Mimosa or Mimosa Borealis. At least that's the species here in Central Texas. There's one on my wall from last week. There are 400 similar species! The most interesting ones are those where the leaves fold up when you touch them, so anytime i see any kind of mimosa i have to touch it! Just watch out for the thorns. With our unusual weather here this year they were unusually full with blooms.

It happens no worry sweetie!!
This is sweet! I need to start taking pics this good lol
Aw, thanks. It was taken with a camera just like your - D80! You could totally get a shot like this.
@goldfishcreeper Comment above is for you...
What kind of lens did you use?
105mm macro, with a little fill light added with my R1 flashes. @goldfishcreeper
Nice! I've been thinking of buying that or the 95 tamron
Tamron is likely a lot cheaper, but most of the macrophotographers I know that shoot Nikon swear by the 105 mm Nikkor. It's a great lens! @goldfishcreeper
