Empire State Building, New York - day shot The other day, I posted a night shot of the incredible Empire State Building. In case you were wondering, here it is in the day time. This 102-story skyscraper has a height of 1,454 ft with the spire. It stood as the world's tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the September 11 attacks, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world). The Empire State Building was once again demoted to second-tallest building in New York on April 30, 2012, when the new One World Trade Center reached a greater height. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Rome - long exposure, night shot The beautiful Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or "Fountain of the Four Rivers" is a fountain in Piazza Navona in Rome. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The base of the fountain is a basin portrays 4 river gods representing 4 major rivers of all 4 continents. Wait! There are 7 continents?! OK... this was 1651, people. See the raised, protective hand on one of the sculptures? Legend is that Bernini positioned the cowering sculpture to look like it was fearing the facade of the church of Sant'Agnese (the building on the right). That building was designed by his hated rival Borromini. Bernini was making a joke that the architecture was so ugly, the sculpture had to shield his eyes. The inside of The Colosseum, Rome ° Tidbit alert: The Colosseum, which was built 2,000 years ago, could accommodate 50,000 people. They were seated in a tiered arrangement that reflected the rigidly stratified nature of Roman society. Special boxes were provided at the north and south ends respectively for the Emperor and the Vestal Virgins. Flanking them at the same level was the senatorial class who were allowed to bring their own chairs. Going up from there was the non-senatorial noble class or knights, then ordinary wealthy Roman citizens, and then poor citizens. The top level was for slaves and women. Some groups were banned altogether from the Colosseum, notably gravediggers, former gladiators and actors. My 15 year old son, in concert last night. ° My son has mastered the art of simultaneous drum playing with head banging. 😊 . I have written before about how incredible it is to see that my kids have found things in their lives that they are passionate about. Those things will probable change over time, but they found "the love". Watching my son perform last night really brought that feeling home. He was in the zone and his hands were a blur. In A.D. 312, Emperor Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius in the crucial Battle of the Milvian Bridge. The night before, he claimed had seen a vision of a cross in the sky. Constantine—whose mother and sister had already become Christians—became sole emperor and legalized Christianity. With this one battle, a once-obscure Jewish sect with a handful of followers became the state religion of the entire Western world. In A.D. 300, you could be killed for being a Christian; a century later, you could be killed for not being one. The Colosseum, Rome 2000 years ago, the Colosseum sat 50,000 spectators. Built when the Roman empire was at its peak in A.D. 80, the Colosseum represents Rome at it's grandest. The Romans pioneered the use of concrete and the rounded arch which enabled them to build on this tremendous scale. The Pantheon, Rome ° Nerd tidbit alert: The 40-foot, single-piece granite columns of the Pantheon’s entrance show the scale the ancient Romans built on. The columns support a triangular Greek-style roof with an inscription that says “M. Agrippa” built it. In fact, it was built (fecit) by Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 120), who gave credit to the builder of an earlier structure.
